“Seasoned Genghis Khan Grand Prix 2025” Winners Announced – Bringing Lamb to Your BBQ!
On June 13, 2025, the awards ceremony for a food idea contest organized by Meat & Livestock Australia took place at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. Winners were announced following a detailed evaluation of competitive entries across Japan.
Genghis Khan – A Part of Japanese Food Culture
Genghis Khan BBQ, a regional specialty of Hokkaido, is a Japanese grilled meat dish primarily made with mutton or lamb. The meat typically comes pre-seasoned with a soy sauce–based marinade known as "Ajitsuki Genghis Khan." Different restaurants and food producers offer their own unique variations, and there are reportedly over 200 types available throughout Japan.

Winners Selected by Judges and Consumers
Now in its fourth edition, this contest requires entries to use Australian lamb or mutton. This year, there were 41 entries for the general consumer category and 34 entries for the restaurant menu category. In addition to a blind judging process conducted by a panel of experts, attendees at the events in Sapporo and Tokyo were invited to sample the entries and cast their votes. Grand prize winners and category awards were determined for both the "Retail Product Division" and the "Restaurant Menu Division."

Thick-Cut Genghis Khan Premium, the Grand Prize in the Retail Product Division. The meat is soft and pleasantly chewy, with no unpleasant odor. The rich and sweet seasoning pairs perfectly with beer. In the contest, where the overall quality is said to improve each year, this dish stood out as the Grand Prize winner.
Genghis Khan will be a must-have meat dish for BBQs.
This seasoned Genghis Khan meat is available as a frozen product, allowing for much longer storage than fresh meat. It only requires grilling for preparation, making it a convenient item to have on hand for spontaneous barbecues. Lamb and mutton have begun to appear in supermarkets across Tokyo, but the average annual consumption per person in Japan remains between 200 and 300 grams. With a variety of unique seasonings, Genghis Khan dishes will boost the popularity of the meat.
